San Antonio Warhammer
Allan is the new owner of Central Command games in San Antonio. Todd and Scott did a fine job with Central Command for many years. Now the torch has passed to Allan... and he is running with that torch like a wild man! The energy around Central Command these days is fantastic! The are constantly getting in new product, holding new events, and sprucing up the joint! Wow! Check out this blog about Central Command Games (the place for San Antonio Warhammer and other wargames)!
The Dice Gods
Friends, I got inspired today and drew a comic strip... one of the first I've penned since college! I may be a bit rust but bear with me... it has been 14 years! I call my new strip The Dice Gods and it is (loosely) based on my experience as a tabletop war-gamer. Go to www.thedicegods.blogspot.com and see it! :) KJC

My Space Marines will miss the Big Battle... dammit!

I am completely bummed out about this. My favorite game store is Central Command games. They are the best place to play Warhammer in San Antonio... or any wargame in San Antonio for that matter. Anyhoo, the next Lucky 13s battle is this coming Saturday and I have to work! Oh, the humanity!
Warmachine New Braunfels

Here are my latest Warmachine pieces. Jesse and I bought this set for our compadre John. I am very proud of these pieces...
Above you'll see Circle of Oboros models that I've painted...
Warmachine in New Braunfels, Texas

Jesse suggested we branch out from Warhammer 40K. I said, "Go for it!" So he did. He bought the WARMACHINE rulebook, bought me a Cryx battlebox and bought himself a couple of battle boxes. We went in together and bought John Ray one for his birthday. Now we are all happily learning WARMACHINE.
Todd up at Central Command Games in San Antonio (the absolute best place to play wargames in the New Braunfels / San Antonio area) ran us through a learning session and we've had a few battles in the garage. Now it is time for some serious painting so we can get on with the WARMACHINE mayhem!

My brother's Venerable Dreadnaught
My brother Jesse has this old Warhammer 40K Dreadnaught. It is awesome! I need to find one on eBay and add one to my army! Anyhoo, Jesse left this unbased, unpainted original 40k dreadnaught at my house yesterday! Now, it is fair to say that Jesse doesn't dig the painting of Citadel Models nearly as much as I do. Hence, I have decided to paint this one for him as a surprise.
Jess, if you are reading my Warhammer New Braunfels blog: surprise!
I started by putting this old dreadnaught on a modern base (it originally came on a square base... square bases aren't used anymore in Warhammer 40K). After that I turned to my Citadel Basing Kit. I added some debris and a blasted out Eldar helmet to the feet of this Venerable Dreadnaught.

Next I covered the base with white glue (known as PVA glue to modeling enthusiasts) and spread small slate (also from the basing kit) all over the base.
Next I'll lay down a base coat of green paint. Jesse is gonna love this!

After the green base coat comes a drybrush of grey...

Then a drybrush of bone white...

"Counts As" Armies in Warhammer
My private shame: my army of The Faithful is really just a bunch of oddly painted Ultramarines
OK... my army is the Ultramarines. My Librarian is Tigerius... they just happen to be Ultramarines dressed in yellow and red! Just kidding a little... my army is Ultramarines for tournament purposes but I closely follow guidelines laid out by GW.

I was a little confused by the Space Marines Codex when I first got it. It seemed that only a couple of armies had access to named characters: Raven Guard, Ultramarines, and Imperial Fists. Did that mean I had to paint my armies only a couple of different ways to have some of the most powerful characters in the game? That seemed to fly in the face of what GW explicitly indicated they wanted people to do: create their own chapters! I was at a loss because I wanted to use the named characters but I definitely wanted to create my own fluff. I found the answers in two places:
First, a GW store employee told me that, as long as a unit was game legal it could be used in a tourney no matter how it was painted. Thus, one could paint their Raven Guard pink and blue as long as they followed all the rules for Raven Guard. One note about this: you cannot paint up an army to explicitly look like, say, Black Templars and then go around claiming they are Imperials Fists... that would be deceptive.
The second place (and far more definitive answer) was found in White Dwarf #308 in an article called "What Does 'Counts As' Mean?" It is a wonderfully well written article and it lays out some rules about "Counts As" It says:
" 'Counts As' Is...
1... an opportunity to make a very thematic addition one of your existing armies or create a theme for an all new army.
2... a way of using existing rules to represent a new army or unit type on the tabletop..
3... a chance to play with a unit or model with rules not normally associated with it.
4... a great way to explore the more esoteric aspects of the rich background of Warhammer and 40K.
'Counts As' Is Not...
1... an opportunity to fool or confuse your opponents deliberately.
2... a way to create new rules for your latest passion.
3... an excuse to use proxy models or chits of paper to represent troops."
Its a great article, troops, and I highly recommend it. The net result for Space Marine players is that if you play a Codex Chapter and want to use a named character they cannot take any variences or use the Chapter Trait system. If you want to use Cassius you have to play with straight up Ultramarine rules. If you want to use Lysannder you have to play straight up Imperial Fists. Also, the way I read it doesn't allow for mixing and matching. You can't have Lysannder AND Shrike in the same armies because one named character requires your army be Imperial Fists and the other Raven Guard.
This came up when I showed up to my first Warhammer 40K tournament: Orkapalooza with a yellow and red Tigerius in hand. The judge said, "So your playing Ultramarine army with no traits?" (Forgive me Todd, if I don't have your exact words right). I said, "Yep. Strait up Ultramarines. I just call them the Faithful." He said, "Okay."
The net result is that, if push comes to shove, my army is truly an Ultramarine army painted yellow and red... I'm so ashamed!
PS If you want to see the ultimate "Counts As" army (the Adeptus Mechanicus army by Dave Taylor featured in White Dwarf #308) you can see pics of it at http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11246 ... it is a wonder to behold! I think that link is pretty old because it indicates that Taylor was using the IG Codex to represent the army but by the time it was published in WD it was represented by the Lost and the Damned.

My Lucky 13s Apocalypse pictures are here...

the Lucky 13s Mega Battle
(note: click on the title above to see GWs info on the Lucky 13s campaign)
Yesterday I played in my first Apocalypse game. It was a 24,000 point game and it was HUGE! I was on the Imperial side with my Faithful Space Marines. We battled over a city of the planet Mordant Prime. Unfortunately, the Imperials lost and my Faithful were cut down to the last man. On the positive side, I had a great time and won an award for the best painted objective marker in the game. It took me two weeks to make. Check it out:

I never got anywhere near my objective marker! As it turns out, the Orks and forces of Chaos were on us so fast that I barely out out in front of my starting zone. My Space Marines were positioned directly in the center of the Imperial line and we were hit HARD! Here is a shot of the Green Horde (left) approaching the Imperial positions (right)...

Here is an image of Captain Vetticus of the Faithful looking out as the green horde approaches the Imerial line:

This monstrous ork warbeast would almost certainly make any but the stoutest shake in their boots...

Here is the Last Stand of the Faithful... they brace themselves for the impact of the onrushing forces of evil!

In the end a grand time was had by all. We played for six hours! I was honored to receive an award for Best Objective Marker! The prize was superbly cool: a Citadel Basing Kit (a $20 value).

I am greatly looking forward to the next Lucky 13s battle. Now, if only they would bring the Warhammer to New Braunfels so I didn't have to drive to the far side of San Antonio...

I am fairly methodical...
"Wanna argue now?"

Step One: put 'em together...

"Thanks!" to my Uncle Jay
Never let it be said that my Uncle Jay UNDER-DOES anything. He heard that my son, brother and I were playing Warhammer 40K and he said "I tried to start playing Warhammer. I'll send you some stuff."
"Some stuff" turned out to be a Warhammer (6th edition) rulebook, a battle set featuring Orcs and the Empire (a HUGE stack of models), a painting stand, 4 Space Marine models, a bunch of Citadel paint vials, a sprue cutter, the "How to Paint Citadel Miniatures" book, and some glue.

My first Tournament was this weekend
I played in a Rogue Trade Tournament called "Orkaplooza" this weekend and had a blast! I played at Central Command in San Antonio. My Space Marine Army (the Faithful) lost two games and won one. I was hoping to win a painting award but I don't know that many people actually saw my army (I don't know may people there yet)... also, there were some BEAUTIFUL armies there.
I realized three things:
1. I need more armor units in my army.
2. I need to add a Devestator Squad
3. Eldar are squishy! They'll shoot the heck out of you from far away but fall like wheat before a scythe once you get clost to them.
PS I was so excited to play in my first tourney! I stayed up until 2:30 am the morning before painting and putting last minute touches on my Marines.
